Self-Care: Why You Deserve It as Much as Anyone Else

Self-Care: Why You Deserve It as Much as Anyone Else

June 20, 20243 min read

The dictionary defines self-care as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health.” But what does that really mean? To some, it might mean getting a full eight hours of sleep every night. For others, it might mean taking a relaxing bath at the end of a long day. And still, for others, it might mean saying “no” to social obligations when they start to feel burned out.

Simply put, self-care is anything and everything you do to take care of yourself — both physically and mentally. It's about listening to your body and giving it what it needs, whether that's rest, exercise, healthy food, or time to yourself.

And guess what? You deserve it just as much as anyone else does. In fact, you might even need it more than others. Here's why.

You're Constantly Giving to Others.

Think about all the people in your life — your family, your friends, your co-workers. Now think about how often you're the one giving and how often you're on the receiving end. If you're like most people, you're doing a lot more giving than receiving. And that's not necessarily a bad thing! Giving is great! But if you're not careful, it can lead to burnout.

You have to be deliberate about making time for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. That might mean getting up 15 minutes earlier each morning to enjoy some peace and quiet before the rest of the house wakes up. Or it might mean blocking off an hour each week to do something you enjoy without any obligations or expectations attached to it. No matter what form it takes, making time for yourself is crucial to maintaining your mental health and well-being.

You Deserve Happiness Just as Much as Anyone Else Does

Yes, there are people in this world who have it worse than you do. But that doesn't mean your happiness is any less important or valid than theirs is. In fact, it's probably more critical than ever for you to focus on your own happiness so that you can be there for others when they need you.

But how can you be expected to make everyone else happy if you're not happy yourself?

The answer is that you can't! So instead of constantly putting everyone else's needs above your own, start putting yourself first every once in a while — even if it feels selfish at first. Over time, it will become easier and more natural until it eventually becomes second nature.

Conclusion:
When was the last time you did something purely for yourself? If you can't remember, then it's been too long! Make a commitment today to start taking better care of yourself — mind, body, and soul — and see how much better you feel as a result. Your happiness deserves just as much attention as anyone else's does!
