Take a Risk: “Why Discomfort is Necessary for Growth"

June 20, 20243 min read

At some point in our lives, we've all heard the phrase, “nothing great happens in your comfort zone.” But what does that actually mean? And why is it true? Simply put, it means that if you're not pushing yourself outside your comfort zone on a regular basis, you're not going to grow. Discomfort is a necessary part of growth.

In order to grow—as people and as businesses—we need to constantly challenge ourselves. That means taking risks, making mistakes, and learning from our failures. It's only by taking risks and stepping outside our comfort zones that we can hope to achieve anything great.

The Comfort Zone Trap

Have you ever found yourself in a rut, doing the same things day in and day out? If so, you're not alone. It's human nature to gravitate toward comfort. We like routines because they make us feel safe and secure. And there's nothing wrong with that—up to a point.

The problem arises when we get too comfortable. When we become too comfortable, we stop taking risks. We become afraid to try new things or step outside our comfort zones. And when we do that, we stop growing.

Think about it this way: imagine you're an athlete training for a big race. If you never push yourself during your training runs, you'll never improve your time. In fact, you'll probably find that your time gets slower and slower the more complacent you become. But if you're constantly challenging yourself and pushing your limits, you'll find that you not only improve with each subsequent race, but that the races themselves become easier.

The same principle applies in all areas of life—not just athletics. If you're not regularly challenging yourself, you're not going to see any growth. Whether it's in your personal life or your professional life, complacency breeds stagnation.

Why Discomfort is Good For You (and Your Business)

There's no doubt about it: discomfort is uncomfortable. No one likes feeling uncomfortable or out of their element. But that doesn't mean it isn't good for us—in fact, quite the opposite is true. Discomfort is essential for growth.

Imagine you're a young child learning to walk. In order to walk, you need to put yourself in a position where falling is a real possibility—because falling is how children learn to walk. It's only by trial and error that they eventually figure out how to keep their balance and stay upright on two feet. The same principle applies later in life as well; just because we're not children any more doesn't mean we don't need to take risks and step outside our comfort zones if we want to see any real growth in our lives.

Of course, discomfort isn't just limited to personal growth; it's essential for businesses as well. After all, businesses are made up of people—people who need to continuously challenge themselves in order to grow professionally. A business that isn't willing to take risks will never achieve anything great; instead, it will only ever achieve mediocrity at best.

Taking risks is essential for both personal and professional growth—without discomfort, neither is possible.

But there's a fine line between taking risks and being reckless; after all, not all risks are created equal. The key is to identify which risks are worth taking and which ones aren't—something that can be difficult to do without experience or expertise. “
